Highly Toxic Dispersant, Corexit 9500, being used in Tauranga Harbour

It is confirmed that Corexit is being used to disperse the growing oil slick in Tauranga Harbour, off New Zealand’s East Coast. Corexit is extremely toxic to both humans and marine life and has been banned across Europe. It’s use in the BP Deep water Oil Disaster in the Gulf of Mexico in 2010, was highly controversial, particularly as members of BPs executive board had associations with the company that produces Corexit. Dispersants ‘worse than oil’

The dispersants being used to break up the hundreds of tonnes of oil leaking from the grounded Rena could be “more harmful than the oil itself”.

Maritime New Zealand (MNZ) has used Corexit 9500 to help break up the oil, but University of Southampton oceanography lecturer Dr Simon Boxall said using dispersants could cause unnecessary harm.
