Memorial Theatre Foyer, Student Union building
As part of our Solidarity fortnight STUDENTS FOR PALESTINE & guest speaker JOHN MINTO present: A motion to affiliate Victoria University with Birzeit University in the West Bank, Palestine as part of the ‘Right to Education’ campaign.
The campaign stresses the plight of students in Gaza and the West Bank to gain education while living under military occupation.
COME ALONG AT 2PM ON FRIDAY THE 29TH OF JULY @ THE MEMORIAL THEATRE FOYER, Student Union Building and VOTE IN FAVOUR in a simple show of hands as we present the motion at a Student Representative Council meeting.
Education is, and should be upheld as a universal human right. Students of all ages in Palestine see their right to education come under deliberate attack.
The Right to Education Campaign at Birzeit University calls on trade unions,
education institutions, social and political movements and concerned individuals
around the world to support the right to education in Palestine.
Israeli military occupation routinely attacks this human right to education through;
• Frequent closures of cities.
• Hundreds of military roadblocks and the construction of the illegal Wall prevent thousands of students and teachers from reaching their schools and universities.
• Students are regularly subjected to intimidation, assault and arbitrary arrest by Israeli soldiers.
• Universities and schools have been closed down, raided and attacked by military order.
By affiliating with the campaign at Birziet Students for Palestine hope to not only to show solidarity and create a growing awareness about the issues young Palestinians face, we also wish to create a trajectory for better communication and further academic links.
We need AT LEAST 50 people present to get quorum so,
a) COME ALONG and drag anyone easily seduced by a worthy cause too
b) SHARE this event as widely and persistently as possible.

See you there!

“The right to education is a fundamental human right and basic to human freedom. The International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, ratified by Israel in 1991, underlines the fact that “Education is both a human right in itself and an indispensable means of realizing other human rights”.
The systematic obstruction and destruction of education in the West Bank and Gaza by the Israeli military occupation not only violates the human rights of individuals, it is an attack on the means and development of Palestinian society as a whole.
The Right to Education is based on the legal and moral authority of a host of international agreements, conventions and declarations relating to education and the protection and freedom of students and children. It is the responsibility of governments, organizations and ordinary people to defend the universal right to education and to demand its realization.”
